A Case of Infarction of Wandering Spleen

Abstract

|
Infarction of wandering spleen is very rare in children. Wandering spleen is characterized by migration of the spleen from its normal position in the left upper quadrant due to laxity or absence of the supporting splenic ligaments. It is necessary to detect this condition early using radiologic modalities such as abdominal CT or ultrasonography for better prognosis. One of treatment options is splenectomy; in addition, postoperative vaccinations and prophylactic antibiotics should be recommended for the infants or children less than 5 years of age. We herein describe a case of torsion and ensuing infarction of wandering spleen in a 19-month-old girl who presented with high fever and abdominal pain. Infarction of wandering spleen should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen in children.
